  1. You hit the nail right on the head there sir. It is important for us to talk with our children as they grow to understand them, communicate with them, and to teach them. But the best teacher of all dads is the dad who teaches by doing. “the truth will be revealed through my actions

Sweet…A + T’s reactions to my tears never ceases to amaze me…they instinctively want to comfort me. They show me the way so much of the time.

By accident I have taken your advice. Last Sunday I offered to cook dinner for our family. After pouring through 2 thickbooks I landed on a good veggie dish that required eggplant. After two unsuccessful grocery stops, my 9yr old daughter and I ended up at a very busy SuperStore. Upon discovering they did not have eggplant (or our backup vegetable – zucchini) I literally began to lose it. I mean really lose it… temper tantrum, etc.etc.
Well, my little girl stopped me, looked at me and said: “Daddy, take a deep breath, I know what we can do. We can cook vegetable kebabs. I know where everything is. I’ve been here with Mommy lots of times. I know what to do…” I kid you not, these were the words that saved me from a total melt down.
Later that night we talked about the day and I made a point about giving her credit for saving her Dad from a very bad emotional experience. I think the whole thing drove us closer together. She saw a vulnerable side of me and decided to jump in an offer some help.
Bottom line: thanks for your thoughts on the issue.

Isn’t it amazing how much we actually depend on our kids to show us what’s important in life? What an touching story, Gord. Thank you for sharing it.
